Vintage Jung - Koch - Quentell "Starfish" Biology Classroom Wall Chart

Vintage pull-down canvas-paper wall chart of a starfish used for instructional and teaching purposes. This particular teaching aide on canvas was manufactured by Jung-Koch-Quentell and printed in Germany. I believe the age of these prints range from the 1950's-1970's. This particular wall chart measures 32 1/2" (W) X 44 1/2" (L).

Botanical wall charts have a history dating back to the 1800s. They were created during a time of educational reform in Germany. The first wall charts were created in the 1820’s, mostly for use in primary schools. In the 1840s, the student population increased 108% while the number of teachers increased only 40%. Wall charts made it possible for teachers to show supporting visuals in large classrooms filled with students.

From 1850 to 1890, botanical wall charts became very popular with the advent of color lithography. Contributing to the popularity of wall charts by Jung, Koch, Quentell specifically, is their absence of text. Because they do not contain text, the charts do not have to be translated. This makes the charts by Jung, Koch, Quentell very versatile.

The condition of this wall chart teaching aid is fair overall. This canvas was installed on a self-acting map roller (the one you pull down and lock and pull more rolls up automatically with force). Due to this, this canvas appears stretched more than the others. Also, since the top was stapled to the wooden dowel, the staples have pressed against the top of the chart, causing indentations and rust staining. It's not extremely noticeable and a good restorer or framer may be able to conceal it better, but they are there and go the length of the chart. There are no large tears, but as you can see the bottom has started to come out of the dowel and has some tearing. Overall, it still displays well and the colors are vibrant and bright, and the back ground is quite dark as there is very little fading, if any. There is fraying and slight tearing on the edges and a few smaller creases and fine tiny areas of color loss (white specs) throughout. It's been stored rolled, so the condition is consistent with that type of storage. It's been stored in a dry environment, however is dusty and will need cleaning if ever matted and framed.

These wall charts have become very popular with designers and used as home decor. The bold colors and subject matter make these unique and vibrant examples suitable for display anywhere.
