Unique Mechanical Clown Promotional Display
Truly unique and possibly one of a kind mechanical clown display. This is a very early piece and was purchased along with several other promotional mechanical display items associated with the Sani-Dairy Company. This clown display is comprised of a wood body and base, with what appears to be a plaster covered face, hand and shoes. The face and shoes appear to be hand painted with amazing detail and color. Display is mechanical, and when plugged in, the head along with the arms move. To the best of my knowledge, the clothes are original and this piece was used to advertise certain products. I believe this to be from the 1940's to 1960's. Display measures 27 1/2" (Height - without hat) X 15" (W) X 9" (D).
Condition is good overall but please contact me with any questions regarding the condition. I will describe this as best as possible. First and foremost, I've owned this piece for many years, I tested the electronics many years ago and got the motor running, however, it would need a new power cord and a "once over" before I would plug it in. I think this would be very simple, but haven't done so. The cosmetic condition of this amazing display is actually good as it was stored in an attic before I acquired. There is cracking, discoloring and paint loss in the face, head area and a chip in the ear. There are small holes in the head where it looks like the hat was tacked to. It could use a cleaning, however I think how it looks just gives it an aged vintage look of the piece. The eyes appear to be glass and amazingly detailed. I believe the clothes to be original and it does appear some repairs were done to them over the years. One of the plaster hands must have broken off so there only a metal frame where the right hand glove is. The other hand is plaster and mostly intact, with a few small holes and wear and discoloring. Again, overall the condition is good with mostly cosmetic issues as explained and seen in pictures.
Please email or call with any questions or for additional pictures.
It's hard to explain the condition of this piece. It definitely has some issues, however, still displays amazingly and attracts immediate attentions by both lovers and haters of clowns. It has an eery and nostalgic look which I assure will be the focus of many conversations.
